A former professional footballer (soccer), Sir Alex Ferguson is the former manager of Manchester United, a position he held for more than 20 years. Prior to managing Manchester United, he was head of Aberdeen, and his successful time there led the city to award him the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen. He was knighted in 1999. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1941, Alex Ferguson began playing when he was 16 years old with Queen’s Park and later St. Johnstone before he got an opportunity with Dunfermline, beginning his professional career. He stayed there for a couple of seasons before joining Rangers, then Falkirk, where he became a player-coach until a new manager took over. He ended his career in 1974 with Ayr United and became manager for East Stirlingshire. A year later, he moved to managing St. Mirren for the next four years, turning them into a First Division championship club. He was fired and joined Aberdeen, winning the Scottish League, and later qualifying for the European Cup Winners’ Cup and defeating Real Madrid for the trophy.
